Tree removal, pruning and stump grinding in Yorkeys Knob, from the headland down to the low ground behind it.

Tree work in Yorkeys Knob

A headland in front, wet ground behind

The township is set behind a prominent rounded headland facing the Coral Sea, and the trees on that rise take the full force of an onshore blow. Crowns on the seaward side are worth thinning before the wet.

West of the headland the land falls away to a flood-prone watercourse. Roots in heavy, wet soil hold less well in a storm, and a truck or grinder may have to wait for the yard to firm up.

Bushland beside the golf course is protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, so a tree on a boundary with it is looked at closely before anything is cut. Only trees inside your own block are quoted.

Yorkeys Knob questions

Mangoes, gliders and wet season access

Does council always remove a troublesome tree?

Not always. Asked to take out a large mango tree in front of the Yorkeys Knob shops, Cairns Regional Council proposed a hormone injection trial instead of removing the tree, to limit its fruit. A private tree can sometimes be managed the same way, with pruning instead of removal.

Is wildlife a concern near the reserve?

It can be. A sign in the Ray Howarth Reserve points out the squirrel glider and the spectacled flying fox, along with the mangroves. Hollows and roosts are looked for before work near the reserve is planned.

When is the best time for tree work here?

In the dry, if the job can wait. Council raised the worst section of the access road so residents are not left stranded during wet season flooding, and a dry season booking avoids the problem altogether.
