Tree work in Newell

Between Saltwater Creek and an eroding beach

Newell Beach is bordered by Saltwater Creek in the north and the Mossman River at its southern end. Houses sit right behind a dune that took a beating in Cyclone Jasper.

Council has since run emergency beach nourishment works to hold the shoreline together. Sand scraping at the southern end is planned to rebuild the natural dune profile.

Sound trees behind a dune help keep sand in place. On a beachfront block, thinning a crown is often a better answer than felling the whole tree.

Newell questions

Foreshore trees, sea views and electric ants

Can foreshore trees be cut back for a view?

No. Those trees stand on council land, and when Douglas Shire consulted residents many raised people clearing trees on public land to create a sea view. The contractor quotes on trees inside private boundaries only.

Why do green waste loads from Newell get attention?

Electric ants were once detected in green waste dropped at the local transfer station, and Biosecurity Queensland then surveyed yards across the suburb. Any green waste from electric ant areas has to be declared to transfer station staff.

Does Douglas Shire allow a sound tree to come out?

Council treats the removal of a tree as the last resort, so pruning and other fixes are weighed before felling.
