Tree work in Cooya Beach

A young suburb at the river mouth

Cooya Beach sits near the mouth of the Mossman River, on its southern bank. Further south the low energy beach gives way to mangrove-covered tidal flats.

Ground this close to tidal water stays soft for much of the year. Soft soil changes where a machine can stand and how a tree is lowered, so the yard is walked before a quote is written.

Cooya Beach questions

Where the foreshore stops and the yard begins

Who looks after the trees along the beach?

Council does. Its foreshore management plan runs from the high tide mark inland to the edge of either a road reserve or residential property boundary, and covers dune protection and weed control.

How can an owner tell if a tree needs a permit?

Often without help. Douglas Shire Council points residents to the table of assessment and the vegetation management code to work that out, and the contractor checks the tree against both too.

Why do so many houses here look fairly new?

The township was planned and named long ago, but development awaited a further 30 years, so most building came late.
